STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVE #4

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ways learners’ personal, family, and community assets and cultural norms can be accessed and should be used to foster educational equity.

While at Ithaca College, I have had the privelege to immerse myself in the Ithaca Community. I have been a volunteer at the After School Program at South Side and involved in various events the community center hosts. I have been able to develop relationships with children of all ages, college students, and older adults. Being involved in the Black community in Ithaca has given me a chance to learn and grow in amazing ways. I have been able to embrace my identity as a Black woman through teaching young Black girls and performing my original poetry.

Black Feminist Alchemy allowed me to exist comfortably, honestly, and safely in a space on Ithaca College campus. I was able to find support from women who looked liked me and shared similar experiences. At the end of the semester, I wrote a letter to Dr. Nia expressing my biggest takeaways from the class and how the class allowed me to grow as a Black woman.

This semester, I have been completing my Fieldwork at the Southside Community Center, which "works to affirm, empower, and foster the development of self-pride among the African American citizens of greater Ithaca." My experience in volunteering at their afterschool Program and holding classes, specifically for Black girls. I am able to implement important work that I have learned and share it with others.
