Student Learning Objective #1: Features

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVE #1

Students will be able to describe developmental and sociocultural contexts that impact education, including how history, institutional practices, and circumstances impact educational equity.

It is important to acknowledge that the evolvement of technology has played a huge role in education over the last several decades. It has allowed students to learn in more interactive and creative ways, making teaching and learning more enjoyable.

But there is a digital divide in classrooms around the country, where some students have access to technology and receive great educations and others struggle for access and to learn. Funding and technological resources for schools all over the country are inequitable.

In my education minor, I have taken a close look at how the lack of technology, internet connection, and tech-trained teachers, especially in schools serving students of color with poor socio-economic backgrounds.

This is concerning for me because I expect to be teaching a multi-classroom setting and I am aware my students will probably be at a disadvantage in a white patriarchal society. But to combat false narratives of race and gender, I will need fair access technology and media tools in our learning evironment.

In my Social and Cultural Foundations of Education class, I engaged in research to answer the question, 'How can critical media literacy empower young Black girls in school?' After collecting and reading different academic journals and research, I wrote a literature review that delved into issues of critical media literacy, the creation of stereotyping/false narratives of Black girls, and possible ways to help Black girls produce counter-narrative.

I expanded on my previous work (above) by designing my own study to address the gaps of knowledge that I uncovered through the literature review process.

Using a survey, I asked Black female college students various questions about 1) the television they consumed growing up, 2) their interaction with social media today, and 3) if how they viewed themselves was influenced by past or present media? My data gave insight to the long-lasting implications that media, narratives, and images can have on us as we age, navigate academia, and become more involved with society. But it also gave me a chance to observe how ideas have evolved in the social media age.

Below is my in-class presentation that accompanied this work.
